History
Sold new to James Dods, of Honolulu, Hawaii on July 30th, 1935. The airplane was crated and shipped via steamship. It was the first Ryan ST to be shipped out of the country.
Mr. Dods flew the airplane through the islands mainly for pleasure. Less than a year later, after Dods had been having financial trouble with the Honolulu Motor Coach company, of which he was the manager, he became despondent, due to the business pressures. On the afternoon of April 21, 1936 at about 17:45 pm he arrived at the airport, and instructed two mechanics, Rowland Low, and Loren Thompson to roll out the ST as he was going to take it up for as pleasure flight, saying” I am going to take a dive into the airport”. With that he took off, climbed to about 1000 feet, and a few minutes later the dive took place and the airplane buried itself two feet into the landing field. It was roaring wide open before it hit. This happened on John Rogers airport. Dods was killed instantly.
