History

This aircraft was purchased new by the Santa Maria Airlines, Santa Maria, California, and put to use as a trainer in their subsidiary Denner School of Flying at Hancock Field. Capt. Allen Hancock, owner of the operation used the ST for his personal use until it was assigned to the Denner School operation. He was a famed Galapagos Island Explorer, and Sea Captain as well as an accomplished pilot.

Roy Jones was director of Training for the school, until Mr. Herman “Bean” Denner sold his interest to Santa Maria in 1937. The Ryan was still on the equipment list at that time. Denner returned to Santa Maria in 1939 and became a flight instructor at the then-called Hancock School of Aeronautics, and instructed often in the same Ryan. It was used for advanced training and instrument flying.

Sometime after 1939 the Ryan was sold to the Ryan school of Aeronautics, where it was used for the CPTP program at the beginning of WW II.

It carried School No. 4.

In 1945 it appeared at the Roscoe Turner Aeronautical Corp, Indianapolis, Indiana, owned by A.H. Christopher.

In about 1959 it was purchased by Mira Slovak, (who fled communist Czechoslovakia in a C-47). He did some work on it and eventually sold it to Donald LaTourette. In 1968 it went to Earl Cramer. The aircraft is listed as being substantially damaged on April 26th, 1969 in Antioch, CA, when it collided with fence posts on landing. The 39 year old pilot was shown to have 162 Hrs TT and 33 hours on type at the time of the accident. Next owner was Mr Benjamin Salsburg of Palo Alto, California. Salsburg purchased the aircraft damaged in 1977 and starting in 1982 had the aircraft restored at Santa Paula Airport. Completed by 1986, it was flown by Salsburg until involved in an accident at Hayward California, on May 30th, 1987, where it left the runway and nosed over, causing damage.

The aircraft was offered for sale by auction in January 1998.

Ownership then passed to Bud Field, of Hayward California, and the Ryan was based at Palo Alto California, after he passed away the aircraft was sold by the estate to Mr. Chris Galloway. On January 22nd, 2013 the registration is shown as being transferred to Mr. Paul B Tackabury, Laguna beach, CA. The aircraft was sold in October 2016 to Mr. Gary Peters, of Lewiston, ID.
