History
By way of W.H. Irwin, Ryan dealer in Atlanta, the airplane was sold new to Franklin Farrel of New Haven, Connecticut. Because Farrels first ST purchased, (NC19457) was involved in an accident during the delivery flight, he decided to abandon that Ryan and purchase this one.
This purchase was made in January 1936. It is not known how it was delivered to Farrel, although it’s quite possible Jack Tweed was again the ferry pilot. Mr Farrel
Used the airplane for pleasure mainly. It was often flown by Jack Tweed in the New Haven and surrounding area.
Not long after Farrel had the Ryan, it was involved in an accident on March 20, 1936 and completely washed out. It could not have been a total loss as W.H. Irvin purchased the remains and had the airplane rebuilt at the Ryan plant by his own mechanics. No information has been found to give details of the March 20th, 1936 accident.
Soon after the rebuild it was sold to Ted Brown, about July 1936. Sometime between March 1940 and April 1941 it was sold back to the Ryan School of Aeronautics, where it was used in their training program, carrying school number 8 on the fuselage side.
About December 1943 it was purchased by R.K. Krouskop, who installed another Menasco C-4, (s/n 446). It was still registered to him in 1946.
Then it was sold to Boise Aviation, Boise, Idaho. They installed another Menasco C-4, (s/n 384)
Next owner appears to have been Carl H. Cooter. Then in 1950 or 1953 it ran out of fuel on take-off and spun in. Date, Place and pilot are unknown.
The papers were apparently saved and purchased by Don Carter about 1960 or so. In the meantime Carter found a PT-20A s/n 352 airframe about 1956 or 1957 in a basement in Oakland, California.
So the PT-20A shown airworthy, is assumed to be SN 352, and carried NC14984. The current ownership and status is unknown.
