History

The airplane was purchased new from T Claude Ryan by J F. (Fred) Schoellkopf IV, a young sportsman flyer from Buffalo N.Y. born October 01, 1910. He was a former Kelley Field pilot with about 800 hours pilot time. He and his bride took delivery in San Diego on or about June 7th, 1936 for a price of $4500.00. The couple used it for air shows and pleasure. They spent their honeymoon flying the ST back to their home in Buffalo.

Upon their return the airplane was housed in their home which was the hangar shown in original photos, a sort of home / barn / hangar type structure.

Mr Schoellkopf eventually became associated with the Bell Aircraft Corporation as an executive and has since retired and passed away.

The aircraft was sold in the 1940s but it has not been determined to whom, but it was used to train Army Air Corps pilots, probably in the CPTP program, Ryan school #14.

The next owner in about October or November was Jack P. Lindsey, then stationed with the Air Corps at Randolph field, San Antonio, Texas. He is turn sold it to Kenneth Harris, then a primary Flight instructor at the Air Corps contract school in Muskogee, Oklahoma during WWII. When the school closed in late 1944 he returned with the Ryan to Greeley, Colorado.

In August, 1945 some parts were ordered by the Clinton & Held Company of Stapleton Airport, in Denver, Colorado. A friend of Ev Cassagneres, Ward H. McMurdo, who supplied photos to Ev, recalls flying it in March 1945 while home on leave from the service. He believes that Mr Harris sold it in September 1945. Harris used the plane for pleasure and kept it based at Greeley.

Around October 1945 it was purchased by Robert H. Hardin, Greenwood, Mississippi.

About 1955 it was owned by Irwin Hirsh, who recalls having the oil tank split open

Over lake Michigan, with a passenger he just made it to a small field in the Chicago metropolitan Area without doing any damage.

Hirsh eventually sold the Ryan to Ravenswood Airport, Des Plains, Illinois about 1956.

It was at that time registered to Abe Marmel. It sat derelict for several years then was bought by Bob Lyjack about 1958. Lyjack did some rebuilding and restoration, and had the registration changed to N1151, which it still carried as of 1992.

It next went to Phillip Guiles, about December 1963, who kept it hangared in Milan, Michigan.

About 1975 the airplane was registered to Keith Simecek. And as of January, 1975 it belonged to Troy (Reb) Stimson, who was restoring it as of 1995 to original condition, and installing a Menasco D4-87 134 hp engine. Mr Stimson traded a 1958 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud to Terry Randell of Har-Ran Aircraft sales for the aircraft.

In August 2009, Stimson put the aircraft up for sale at $165,000 USD. Purchased by Alain Grisay, CEO of F&C Asset Management Plc UK.

The aircraft was imported to the UK in 2010, and is currently based at Kemble airfield, where it is kept in immaculate condition.

Mr Grisay Passed away suddenly, age 59 on February 2, 2014. The aircraft is currently held by his estate.
