History

The aircraft was sold new through Ryan dealer O.J. Whitney to Demorr Aeronautical Corporation. The ship was initially shipped in a crate to Whitney via Santa Fe-Penna R.R. together with Ryan NC17352 (SN 156) Date of sale was April 21st, 1937. Whitney assembled the aircraft and flew it to Demorr at Paoli, Pa. It was sold by Mr. Nicholas W. Morris, VP of Demorr on September 1938 to Doctor John Royal Moore. Moore hangared the aircraft at Boulevard Airport near Philadelphia. One time Dr. Moore suffered a bad landing and had some major repairs, (fuselage and wings) done at the well known Reading Aero Service at Whander Field, Reading, Pa. He apparently ran into an unmarked ditch on an airport, causing the damage.

Moore sold the airplane to William A. Ong about June 1940, where it was used in the CPTP program. Ong took delivery on June 21st, 1940 at his base in Emporia, Kansas. A few days later the Menasco engine quit at 300 feet while being flown by a student and his instructor, and they “washed out” the aircraft, but neither pilot was injured.

Due to the extensive damage they decided to salvage the engine and scrap the remainder of the airframe parts, which they sold to Leslie Bowman in Texas. Bowman completely rebuilt the Ryan.

Sometime before June of 1944 it was sold to the Memphis Flying Service then to Joseph James in Missouri. Shortly after James purchased it he was entered into the service and sent overseas. He had very little experience with the plane so he stored it. Because storage expenses kept mounting and the future looked indefinite as to his return he had his father sell it. He does not remember to whom.

Mr. James remembers flying with a Memphis Flying Service instructor one day to Old Harris Field. Coming back into Cape Girardeau they ran out of fuel and had to make a dead stick landing which they did without incident.

Records show that the airplane was involved in an accident on July 9th, 1954 at Thomasville, Georgia. The Pilot was John D. Bandy of Union City, Tennessee. The owner at the time was Gordon McCann.

Mr. Bandy was injured with bruises and shock and entered Archibold Memorial Hospital at Thomasville. He was delivering the airplane to Orlando, Florida and apparently ran out of fuel near Boston and attempted a forced landing.

Final airframe disposition is unknown. Many years later the papers were applied to Guatemalan Ryan STM SN 192, presently in storage and in the process of restoration by Fred Spec, of Bradford Woods, Pa.
