History
This is the last Civilian ST-A built, and was sold originally to the Civil Aeronautics Authority on January 16th, 1940, proposal #262, spec No. CAA -193 and flown to Washington, D.C.
Actual factory construction started on November 20th, 1939 and took 2100 man hours to build at an actual material value of $2000.00.
The Aircraft carried the registration NC9 on the upper right and lower left wing, with “US” on the upper left and lower right wing. The CAA used it mainly for both experimental and transportation use, and it was assigned to famed pilot Len Povey.
For a short while it was used as a PT-16 demonstrator while attempting to sell to the Canadian Government, but lost out in the competition.
It went through a succession of owners, starting with Earl Richard Attebury, who purchased it on May 16th, 1946, then George E. Feist, 1954, R.L Hallbeck, 1954, William T. O`Connell Jr. 1958, Allen Fowler about May 1958, F.J. Bostwick, 1956, John C. Luebke, about November 1959, Capt. Robert R. Webster, 1961 who sold it in November 1964 to Dorr Carpenter.
In February 1965 Carpenter flew it from Chicago south to Florida, then over the Atlantic Ocean to Nassau, Bahamas and then on to Mexico City and back north to Chicago. This was one of the longest post WWII flights ever to be made in a civilian Ryan on record.
Carpenter sold it in August 1966 to Roger J. France, who sold it to Paul Ennis, Salisbury, Maryland.
