History
The ship was purchased by Ryan dealer W.H. Irwin, along with several others, (NC14957, 14983, 14985, 16034, and 14914) He in turn sold it to R.J. Phillips on January 23rd, 1936. In January 1938 it was purchased by H.W. King, a Delta Airlines pilot. The airplane was in storage from summer 1938 to about March 1940 and unlicensed. Then it went to Grady Montgomery and eventually drifted up to the St. Louis Flying Service about 1940 where it was rebuilt and made airworthy. It was used for training at Lambert Field along with NC14911 and NC17305. They eventually sold it to Horace M. Barnes on October 21st, 1940; he used it in the CPTP program and for aerobatics.
It met its fate when on July 26th, 1941 the landing gear was being washed with gasoline during the changing of a blown tire. Somehow the gasoline ignited and the airplane caught fire, burning off all of the fabric and warping the fuselage.
The aircraft was scrapped except for the Menasco.
There is also a rumour the airplane was involved in a “washout” in 1945
No further details are known.
