History

Operated initially as a trainer by Ted Brown, it went to Jim Dewey and Harold Foot about 1937. Dewey used it for student training. He installed a special prop(?) and steerable tail wheel operated by wires from the rudder pedals.

They had no ground handling problems and showed the rig to the Ryan company.

They eventually built the same rig for all subsequent aircraft except theirs was somewhat mushy and difficulty was experienced.

On Tuesday, August 10th, 1937, the aircraft as rented by Charles Graham of Los Angeles. He was the son of wealthy real estate operator Charles Graham Sr of Montebello, in Oklahoma. He proceeded to fly the plane away towards Palm Springs in the desert where he planned to visit his friend, Charles Goff. Upon arrival at the palm Springs area he circled over the Goff hotel to let Charles know that he had arrived, and then headed for the airport. It is believed that he overshot the runway as he attempted to land and then attempted to gain more altitude and thus circled the field for another attempt. Authorities believe the airplane stalled when he attempted to climb because it had lost much of its airspeed, and slid backwards about 200 feet, and crashed to the ground. The engine was pretty well buried in the ground. Graham, of course died instantly and the airplane was destroyed, supposedly.

However, Jim Dewey kept any parts which were salvageable, and with original drawings just about scratch built the airplane to like new condition in 1987 after 3 years of work.

He sold it to Steve Pitcairn of Bryn Athyn Pennsylvania in the fall of 1987 and Steve flew it across the country to its new home. In 1993 it was sold to Larry W. Lee of Atlanta, Georgia.
