History
The Ryan was sold new on January 21st, 1937 to Franklin Rose Aircraft, a Ryan distributor. In a 1937 Western Flyer magazine ad, Rose placed an order for 10 STs, but this is the only ship known to have passed through their hands. They in turn sold it to Filmore Flying Service in late 1939, and in early 1940 it went to W.G. Walker, owner of the Tredway – McAbee Flying Service.
In July 1940 it was sold to Webb Flying Service who used it in the CPTP program.
On May 29th, 1941 the airplane was destroyed at Boise, Idaho. Edward Ahlm J.
a 25 year old student pilot from Buhl, Idaho was killed when the plane entered a spin at 2000 feet and crashed into an Alfalfa field, located 6 miles west of the airfield.
Ahlm had done many spins previously in the program and it was not determined why he was unable to recover on this occasion. At Webbs Flying Servicve all planes and Pilots were grounded for the day out of respect for Ahlm.
Ahlm had been flying at Boise for about a month, his instructor was Malcolm Parsons, and he had 5 to 6 hours in the Ryan.
He had previously logged about 100 hours prior to training with Webb’s. He was enrolled in a secondary or advanced CPTP program, as he had completed and graduated from a primary course and received his licence.
The aircraft was destroyed.
