History

Sold new on July 5th, 1938, to the Government of Guatemala, Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Equipped with machine gun mounting brackets and synchronisers.

The ship was found and purchased by Hower Aircarft company, in 1959 or 1960.

In 1961-62 Ed Ortowski bought up several of the Guatemalan ships, including this one, and started to rebuild it to ATC 681 specs. Ortowski was killed in an unrelated aircraft accident, and Mrs Ortowski sold the plane to R.K. Egger in about August, 19868. It was in parts and restoration was never started by Ortowski. The U.S registration number N17351 was applied for by Ortowski and issued, which was from the original Ryan s/n 154 which is now N633X. It was sold to Egger about September 1968.

Next owner was Donald Sharp, date unknown.

On November 8th, 1980 it was purchased by Sam Appleby, from Harold C. Malloy and Charlene W. Maloy.

Appleby did extensive work on the airplane and installed a Menasco C-4S s/n 368 and Fitzsimon model 1716 propeller, and finished up the work with a fancy all white with black and gold trim paint job. It was re licensed on August 7th, 1985. On August 10th, 1985 Appleby was killed in the airplane. (see accident report in notes) The remains of the airframe were sold to William Rose, who put everything in storage to await a complete restoration. The purchase also included the original paperwork. Apparently the remains and paperwork are now in the possession of Pegasus Aircraft of Miami, Florida.
